Most – if not all – parents breathe a huge sigh of relief when their kids no longer need to take a lunchbox to school.
Constantly having to come up with fresh ideas, making sure that the contents are healthy and don’t transgress any of the school’s restrictions (eg things that contain nuts) and choosing foods that your child will actually eat is a daily challenge, so it’s no wonder parents do a happy dance when the last lunchbox leaves the kitchen!
Of course, you can find inspiration by scrolling through social media channels like Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest and googling ‘great lunchbox ideas’ will also yield a heap of different ideas. Jerky is made by heat-drying thin strips of meat which have been marinated in a sauce mixture, whilst biltong is produced by air-drying larger cuts of meat that have been salted and spiced. Once the chunks have been dried (you can get dry or moist biltong depending on how long they are left to dehydrate), they are then cut to the desired size.
There are numerous nutritional benefits to these meaty treats. They’re high in protein and low in fat and carbohydrates, plus they contain essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B12, iron, zinc and magnesium that contribute to healthy growth and development of little people.

You don’t need to keep jerky and biltong in the fridge (unless it’s a searingly hot summer’s day), so they make great fillers for kids’ lunchboxes. They also don’t need to be kept in an airtight container, so you can chuck a couple of strips straight into the box without having to hunt for a small Tupperware or use an unnecessary plastic bag.
