Most – if not all – parents breathe a huge sigh of relief when their kids no longer need to take a lunchbox to school.
Constantly having to come up with fresh ideas, making sure that the contents are healthy and don’t transgress any of the school’s restrictions (eg things that contain nuts) and choosing foods that your child will actually eat is a daily challenge, so it’s no wonder parents do a happy dance when the last lunchbox leaves the kitchen!
Of course, you can find inspiration by scrolling through social media channels like Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest and googling ‘great lunchbox ideas’ will also yield a heap of different ideas. However, not all of the suggestions are simple and you probably don’t have the time, inclination or ingredients to bake zucchini muffins, julienne vegetables, whip up curried eggs or create a Disney masterpiece on homemade seed bread on a daily basis! Sometimes, you simply want healthy and tasty foods that are big on convenience, big on flavour and which will pass your child’s taste test.
Have you considered jerky or biltong?
What makes a healthy lunchbox?
There are many factors which determine what you put in your child’s lunchbox including their age, their appetite, any allergies, the length of their day and your budget, but the great thing about jerky and biltong is that it ticks a lot of boxes.
What makes biltong and jerky fantastic for lunchboxes?
A healthy lunch box will give your child the energy to play, move, concentrate and learn all day.
The good news is that biltong and jerky are choc-a-block with healthy goodness and they’re big on convenience too.
They’re made from dried meat (we make ours with premium Aussie beef) and they come in various flavours and textures to suit individual tastes. Jerky is made by heat-drying thin strips of meat which have been marinated in a sauce mixture, whilst biltong is produced by air-drying larger cuts of meat that have been salted and spiced. Once the chunks have been dried (you can get dry or moist biltong depending on how long they are left to dehydrate), they are then cut to the desired size.
The health factor
There are numerous nutritional benefits to these meaty treats. They’re high in protein and low in fat and carbohydrates, plus they contain essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B12, iron, zinc and magnesium that contribute to healthy growth and development of little people.

The convenience factor
You don’t need to keep jerky and biltong in the fridge (unless it’s a searingly hot summer’s day), so they make great fillers for kids’ lunchboxes. They also don’t need to be kept in an airtight container, so you can chuck a couple of strips straight into the box without having to hunt for a small Tupperware or use an unnecessary plastic bag.
The ‘easy to eat’ factor
Biltong and jerky pass the ‘easy to eat’ test with flying colours! There are no crumbs or sticky fingers so your child won’t have to miss out on a moment’s fun – and if a stray piece is left in your child’s pocket, you won’t have to deal with a soggy, mushy, crumbly mess. Any parent who’s had to extract the remnants of an old banana from the bottom of a bag will appreciate the joys of mess-free food!
The taste test
We’ve left the best for last. Every little piece is packed with healthy goodness and few can resist the meaty, savoury, yummy goodness of biltong and jerky. It’s just so more-ish.
Why not give it a try yourself?
