What's on the Blog

Some like it hot.  Others like to experiment and spice things up while there are those who prefer to play it safe.  Some people’s tastes sway towards the exotic while for others, a little smoke is enough to get them firing on all cylinders.

We’re talking about jerky of course, and we’re talking about all the different flavours of this meaty treat which has become one of the world’s favourite healthy snacks.

There’s no such thing as boring jerky

One of the great things about jerky (and trust us, there’s plenty to get excited about) is that you are guaranteed to find a flavour profile that suits you.  Whether you prefer to stick to the basics or experiment with new taste combinations, you’re bound to find your favourite in DJays Gourmet’s ever-expanding range of premium all-natural beef jerky.

But how do you know which flavour of jerky is for you?

Whether you like things spicy or sweet, hot or mild, exotic or conventional – this guide to the different flavours of jerky will help you choose the right one for you.

Discover the different flavours of beef jerky

We’ve made it easy for you to find your favourite by categorising jerky flavours into three sections – traditional, spicy and bold.   This will help you decide which one to choose – and remember, if you’re struggling to narrow down your options, you can always order our jerky sampler and try out some new flavours!

1. Traditional Jerky – suits people who like traditional savoury snacks

Our motto at DJays is ‘Traditional and Exceptional’ and it’s how we describe our traditional jerky too.  Made from 100% premium Australian beef and marinated in a tasty mix of salt and spices, traditional jerky is for you if you like to keep things mainstream.

      2. Spicy jerky – suits those who like their tastebuds like to be tickled with a little heat.

Spicy jerky is never dull and we suggest you try the following two flavours – chilli jerky and extra hot chilli jerky.

Our chilli jerky won’t leave you gasping for air, but it does deliver a warming, peppery kick through the perfect balance of chilli and sweet.

On the other hand, if you want to really fire up your tastebuds, then our extra hot chilli jerky is the one for you!  Yes it’s hot (but we take care not to make it so scorching that you can’t taste its meaty goodness) and it will get your whole body zinging.

      3. Bold jerky – this category suits people who like trying new flavours and who like their snacks to have a taste of the exotic.

The different types of jerky in this category are truly bold and beautiful – and so if you like to have a little fun with flavour, these are the ones to try.

Our juicy smoky jerky has just the right amount of smoke and sweet to make your mouth water, while our mango chilli jerky brings sweet and heat together in a funky flavour combo that has gone gangbusters since its release.

      Exploring different jerky flavours

There are plenty of other flavours of jerky – ranging from the weird to the wonderful – such as teriyaki jerky, maple syrup jerky, honey soy jerky, Cajun BBQ jerky, salt and vinegar jerky, chipotle lime jerky and pepper and garlic jerky.   With so much choice, it’s hard to know which one is for you, so we hope this article has helped you define your taste range.

It’s worth remembering that jerky tends to have a higher sodium and sugar content than its dried meat counterpart, biltong.  Its nutritional profile varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and also depends on the ingredients used in the marinades.  If you want to make sure that the flavour of jerky you are eating lines up with your health goals, then always check the details on the packaging.

Here at DJays Gourmet, we only use 100% premium grass-fed Australian beef with salt, soy sauce, vinegar and spices to make our jerky – with no nasties like preservatives, added sugar or MSG.

Our highly experienced team of meat technicians and flavour experts are constantly testing new flavour combinations, but we’re also 100% dedicated to product excellence.  We love experimenting with different ideas, but we will never release anything that doesn’t meet our exacting standards.

      Different types of jerky

Lean beef is by far the most popular protein for jerky, but it is possible to make jerky from other proteins such as chicken, turkey, game, fish and so on.   Jerky is also usually made by cutting chunks of meat into thin strips and dehydrating them over heat, but you can also get jerky that is made from chopped and formed meat.  The texture of jerky will depend on the type of protein used as well as the manufacturing process, and will vary from firm and dry to chewy and tender.

      Finding your favourite

With so many options, it can be tricky to narrow things down to just a few favourites.  We suggest keeping a lookout on our website for new releases, check out our blog section for more information on beef jerky and sign up for our regular email updates.  As mentioned earlier, you can also order our jerky sampler or our four-pack of different jerky flavours to get a taste of what’s on offer.
