Spanish paella sprinkled with biltong dust? British roast beef and Yorkshire pudding with biltong gravy? A Texan fried chicken burger with biltong mayo? Biltong dip at an Aussie picnic?
Biltong-inspired recipes aren’t the only things to incorporate a taste of South Africa as more and more people from the Rainbow Nation make their homes in other countries.
With official statistics putting the South African diaspora at close on a million people (with unofficial numbers far higher), it’s no surprise that some of the beloved home-grown traditions and tastes of South Africa are now woven into the fabric of the emigrants’ adopted countries.
Demand for biltong is growing
Biltong is probably the most widely recognised South African product and with so many ways to get your hands on high quality meaty treats wherever you are in the world, you’re never far from a taste of home.
From ordering biltong online, visiting specialist South African shops or buying it at your local supermarket or service station – it’s never been easier to satisfy your craving for what’s widely accepted as THE taste of South Africa!
But it’s not just expats who are fuelling the growing demand for biltong.
From Australia to the UAE, England to America, France to Canada and everywhere in between, South Africans abroad are introducing their new friends and colleagues to the irresistible taste and texture of biltong – and it seems to be love at first bite!
Why is biltong becoming a global favourite?
Most people from other cultures are completely smitten after tasting biltong’s savoury goodness for the first time – and instead of waiting for their South African friends or colleagues to offer it, they’re buying it for themselves! After all, who can resist the tasty moreishness of premium beef biltong, made the traditional way using time-honoured techniques and ingredients?
And when you consider the health benefits, convenience and portability of biltong – it’s no surprise that so many foreigners are now buying their own for their lunchboxes, sports bags, picnic baskets etc – and are using biltong in innovative ways to jazz up their own traditional recipes.
A simple Google search for ‘buy biltong near me’ (geolocated in a suburb in Perth) yielded around 5 240 000 results in 0.23 seconds. Given that this coastal city is a favourite for South African emigrants with over 38 500 living there according to the 2021 Australian Bureau of Statistics, it’s inevitable that there would be an appetite for biltong in Perth, but the huge volume of search results and the plethora of shopping options are a clear indication that demand for this tasty treat isn’t limited to expats. Everyone loves biltong!
Biltong isn’t the only South African product that enjoys worldwide popularity
People are more mobile than ever and many countries like the UK, Australia and New Zealand have become multicultural melting pots. Multiculturalism has brought an exciting cross-pollination of products and traditions and just as biltong is enjoying a renaissance in foreign shores thanks to the volumes of South African expats, so too are some of the country’s other traditions.
For example, you’ll find music, dance and culinary festivals featuring unique South African artists and creations, you’ll hear the uniquely South African vuvuzela loud and proud at sporting events around the globe (despite it being outlawed) and the South African global dance sensation – DJ Master KG’s ‘Jerusalema’ – is still a firm favourite on playlists around the world.
One of the joys of living in a multicultural society like Australia is that it exposes you to people who have diverse heritages and it offers up many varied and enriching experiences. So much can be gained from interactions with people from different cultures – and given the surging global popularity of South Africa’s deliciously healthy dried meat treat – it would seem that people from other countries are fast learners when it comes to the goodness of biltong!
